INTRODUCTION
History
of the Greasewood Springs Community School, Inc. Diné
Curriculum
This
is a revised Diné Curriculum developed for use beginning
in the G.S.C.S school year 2006-2007. It is based on the framework
developed by the G.S.C.S Curriculuim Project Study Group in
1997.
We
are mandated by a directive from the Board of Directors, the
Navajo Nation Code and TITLE III monies to create this Diné
Curriculum.
Our
curriculum adheres to the existing State and Federal Guidelines
and the Public Law 107-110 mandates of TITLE III.
Diné
Studies constructed a curriculum guideline in the year 2000
for use in the K-4th grades at G.S.C.S. In 2001, the Curriculum
for grade 5-8th were completed and is in continued use with
modifications as needed.
Work
continues to improve the system as mandated by Navajo Laws,
the context of this system, the content of what our children
should know and do, how we teach (instruction) the curriculum
and how we assess the curriculum is now driven by improved
research methods.
PHILOSOPHY
This
program believes education of children begins at home with
family as the basis for education. The family and the school
believe this is a basis for perpetuating the Diné Language
and for its preservation through its use and real world application.
Our Language is the foundation where elements of Diné
and Western education are learned. The context of this program
follows the Diné Principles. The program and school
cherish the sacred and unique children who have a right to
education.
GOAL
Our
community realizes that our language is diminishing and the
research which strongly indicate that Language is a key to
learning. Our language will be used as that stepping stone
to learning both the Diné and Western knowledge. We
will do this by teaching student to speak, read, and writing
the Diné Language. They will learn Diné history
and culture through the use of Arizona State Standards and
the Navajo Nation Standards. They will have a worldview through
the language. We think this is a strategy that will improve
the children for the betterment of themselves and our society.
MISSION
STATEMENT
The
Mission of Diné Studies is to apply the Diné
view and belief through the principles of Diné culture.
This principle is the Diné foundation of “there
is a universal natural order”. We will use this as our
context, our organized system of content, instruction and
assessment. This order of information is as follows:
- Information
of the EAST Direction, (thinking clearly, wisely and carefully)
- Information
of the SOUTH Direction, (creative development of clear and
concise planning)
- Information
of the WEST Direction, (positive approach to life and living)
- Information
of the NORTH Direction, (evaluate, analyze, gain and show
pride for the finished product)
- To
prepare the Student for further education in Diné
Studies.
- Establish
social responsibility, community service and scholarly endeavors
that contribute to the social, economic and cultural wellbeing
of the Diné people and its Nation.
